Consultant or Not?

How to determine if you need a wedding consultant/planner/coordinator, and if you do, how to hire one.

DO YOU NEED A WEDDING CONSULTANT?

Take this simple test to decide if you should hire a wedding consultant:

1. Do you have unlimited time to work on the wedding of your dreams and do all the planning yourself,
while still maintaining your daily habits and obligations?

2. Are you articulate in planning a wedding budget?

3. Are you primed in the proper etiquette involved in a wedding?

4. Are you aware of the reputations of the service providers you will be selecting?

5. Are you skilled in negotiating contracts between yourself and a service provider?

6. Do you, or your fiancé, have a relative that would be overjoyed to plan your wedding,
even though they have never done so, or made a disaster out of the last one they did?

7. Do you have a problem saying "NO" to Mom? It is your "day", but she is footing the bill.

8. Now that she has heard you are getting married, does cousin Sarah have a daughter she thinks
would be perfect for the "flower girl," even though you haven't seen her in 15 years, but she
   is family (sort of)?

9. Are you aware of the resources available to you, and know where to find them, to help
   you with your plans?

10.Do you know what to do if you ordered the wedding dress and/or maids dresses, and there is a
problem? (Example: Wrong color, tea length instead of formal, etc.)

SCORE:
1. Yes +1 No -1
2. Yes +1 No -1
3. Yes +1 No -1
4. Yes +1 No -1
5. Yes +1 No -1
6. Yes -1 No +1
7. Yes -1 No +1
8. Yes -1 No +1
9. Yes +1 No -1
10.Yes +1 No -1

8-10: Not only would you do a fantastic job of your own wedding, you may have found yourself a new career!
5-7:  You probably would do okay, but is the stress really worth it?
4 or less: Go directly to the phone book, open it to the Yellow Pages, look under "Wedding Consultants,
Planners, Coordinators - they all do pretty much the same job - and CALL!

HOW TO HIRE A WEDDING CONSULTANT
Asking the following questions will help you decide on which Consultant is best for you:

Do you have a business license? How long have you been in this business?

Do you have references? Ask for three referrals from past brides and speak with them.

How many weddings have you handled?

How many other weddings will you be working on while handling mine? A professional wedding
consultant will work 2-3 weddings a month. You need to feel comfortable with your consultant
and assured you will receive the personal attention you deserve and that they are available
at your convenience.

What exactly are the services you offer?

What formal training do you have?

May I have an agreement in writing? It should be signed by both you and the consultant, and state
exactly what is their responsibility and what is yours.

What is your pricing policy? Services are best paid for by the hour. Costs can get high if you are paying a percentage of the total
or according to how many guests there are. Determine in advance "Exactly" how the consultant will be paid.

Am I obligated to use your service vendors?

Do you receive a fee from the service vendors you refer? The answer here should be "NO." A consultant should NOT be receiving pay from
you and the vendors. If for some reason a dispute arises, who will the consultant favor? You or their regular vendors? That's an
easy answer...and it is not you!

Make certain you and your consultant have an excellent relationship. You don't need the additional stress from personality clashes.
Make sure the contract has an "Escape Clause" in the event problems arise.
